Bastoni plays as a left back who likes to push high, while Bisseck occupies the right back position to cover wide areas. In the heart of the defence, de Vrij and Hakan Calhanoglu act as central defenders. Calhanoglu, the captain, uses his passing range to play out from the back, while de Vrij uses his aerial strength to defend crosses. This unit stays narrow to protect the central zone.

The midfield works as a four man block to squeeze the space. Barella acts as a carrier who drives forward with the ball to connect the lines. Darmian and Dimarco occupy the central midfield slots, with Dimarco often drifting wide to provide service. Mkhitaryan plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers to find pockets of space.
