West Ham Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Emerson · Todibo · Kilman · Mavropanos · E. Álvarez · G. Rodríguez · Kudus · Soler · L. Paquetá · Bowen · AreolaWest Ham aim to control games through a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to dominate the central areas by crowding the opposition and using a high volume of players to move the ball. By playing with a narrow central block, West Ham attempt to win the ball back high up the pitch and use their numbers to move forward quickly.
Areola operates between the posts as the lone man in goal. The defensive line consists of a two man back line where Mavropanos and Kilman act as the central defenders. Mavropanos uses his aerial strength to win headers, while Kilman focuses on covering space behind the high line. These two must be ready to step up to stop attacks before they reach the penalty area, as the team plays with very little cover behind them.
The midfield acts as the engine of this formation with five players occupying the central zones. Todibo and Emerson form a double pivot to shield the two defenders, providing a base to recycle possession. E. Álvarez and G. Rodríguez play as inverted eights, working to connect the defense to the attack and press in a mid-block. L. Paquetá operates as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find the feet of his teammates and play through the lines.
The attack uses three players to stretch the opposition. Kudus plays as the pressing centre-forward, using his strength to hold up the ball and wait for support. On the flanks, Bowen and Soler act as wide wingers who can cut inside to create central overloads. This front three aims to pin the last defender and create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The goal is to use quick combinations to break the line and find space in the final third.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. By crowding the middle, West Ham can squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opposition. The team also benefits from the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the five midfielders to trigger a press the moment possession is lost.
This setup is built for teams that want to suffocate the opponent in the center of the park. It is most effective against sides that struggle to play under pressure and rely on slow buildup.
