Baines and Boyce play as the wide defenders, where Baines will overlap the winger to provide width on the left flank. The midfield utilizes a two-man central pairing with Martinez and Bullard. Martinez stays deeper to shield the defense, while Bullard works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Liddell and N'Zogbia occupy the wide positions in the midfield four. N'Zogbia often looks to cut inside to create more central presence, which allows the team to recycle possession and move the ball through the thirds with intent and purpose.

The front line uses two forwards in a partnership consisting of McCullough and Rodallega. Rodallega acts as a target man to hold up the ball and lay it off to teammates. McCullough looks to make runs in behind the defensive line to stretch the defense. The attack is built through combinations, often using the width provided by Liddell and N'Zogbia to find the feet of the striker and pull wide.

One strength of this Wigan formation is the ability to press in a mid-block and maintain compactness when defending. The team is very capable of hitting in behind on the transition once the ball is won. They also gain an advantage through the ability to win the second ball in the middle of the pitch and switch play quickly.
