Athletic relies on a direct and vertical identity by employing a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opponent through a high press and rapid transitions that force errors in the middle third. The team aims to pin the last defender back by keeping many players high up the pitch, creating a constant threat in the final third.

UnaiSimón guards the goal and acts as the foundation for the defensive unit. The back four operates as a zonal line, with Gorosabel and Yuri playing as full backs who can push up to support the wings. In the center, Vivian and Paredes hold the line, with Vivian using his aerial strength to win the header and Paredes acting as the covering defender. They must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or drop into a low block if the team loses control.

The midfield is controlled by a double pivot consisting of Jaureguizar and RuizDeGalarreta. RuizDeGalarreta plays to receive the ball on the half turn and recycle possession, while Jaureguizar focuses on shielding the defense and picking up runners in front of the back four. This duo is tasked with winning the second ball and driving the team forward when playing short from the back. They act as the vital link that allows the team to progress through the thirds.

The attack is heavily weighted with four players pushing against the opposition back line. Williams and NicoWilliams act as wide wingers who spread wide to stretch the defence. NicoWilliams uses his dribbling and pace to break the line and isolate defenders, while Williams looks to get to the byline and whip it in. Sancet and Guruzeta lead the line as a two man partnership, where Sancet tries to play through the lines and Guruzeta works to hold up the ball to find the feet of his teammates.

This formation provides the advantage of wide overloads when the full backs overlap the wingers. By keeping four players high, Athletic can also press from the front in coordinated waves to win the ball back high up the pitch. The team can hit in behind on the transition with great speed before the opponent can recover their positions.

This 4-2-4 formation is a high risk and high reward system that prioritizes offensive pressure and width. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a slow build up and struggle to deal with direct attacks.
