Starting Lineup

Samu · Navarro · Pepê · Galeno · Mora · Nico · Varela · Nehuen · Djaló · Otávio · Diogo

FC Porto looks to control the pitch through a high press and rapid transitions using a 3-5-2. This formation allows the team to stay compact while maintaining enough bodies to dominate the central areas. By using this lineup, the club can quickly shift from a defensive block to an attacking wave to catch opponents off guard.

Diogo guards the goal as the last line of defense. In front of him, a back three consists of Djaló, Nehuen, and Otávio. Nehuen and Otávio act as wide centre-backs to cover the flanks, while Djaló sits in the middle to dominate in the air and manage the central space. The unit aims to hold a high line to squeeze the space, with the defenders ready to cover each other if a runner breaks through.

The midfield is the engine of the FC Porto system, operating as a five man unit. Nico plays as a single pivot to shield the defense, while Varela works alongside him to win the second ball and recycle possession. Galeno and Pepê act as two inverted eights, driving forward with the ball and making late runs into the box to support the attack. Mora operates as an attacking ten in the hole, playing through the lines to find the forwards.

The attacking line features a partnership of two forwards, Navarro and Samu. Samu acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win headers, while Navarro plays as a pressing centre-forward to force long balls from the opposition. They combine in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position, often looking to exploit runs in behind or receive layoffs from the midfield. The width comes from the midfielders pushing high, allowing the front two to focus on verticality.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By packing the midfield, the team can easily control the tempo and win possession back high up the pitch. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the direct connection between Mora and the striking duo allows the team to break quickly once the ball is won.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a heavy presence in central zones to dominate possession. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a single pivot or those that struggle to handle high pressing intensity.
