Starting Lineup

Focusing on defensive solidity and a mid block, SK Sturm utilizes a 4-5-1 formation. This team is built to congest the center of the pitch and force opponents to play wide. The lineup is designed to win the ball back and launch quick transitions.

Bono stays between the posts to lead the defensive unit. The back four features Ryerson as the right back and Machado as the left back. Stankovic and Skipp play as the central defenders. Ryerson and Machado are expected to overlap to provide width, while the central pairing works to hold the line and cover the space behind the full backs. The defensive unit works as a single block to deny the turn and force the opposition wide.

To control the center, the midfield uses a five man unit. Tolisso and Lopy form a double pivot to shield the defense. Tolisso drops deep to receive the ball and recycle possession, while Lopy looks to intercept and break the line. Guedes, Prass, and Ocampos operate in front of the pivot to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Guedes and Ocampos work in the half spaces to create passing lanes, while Prass carries the ball forward to link the play.

Leading the line, Danjuma acts as a lone striker to press from the front. He works to pin the last defender and find the feet of the midfielders. The attack is built through quick transitions where Danjuma holds up the ball to allow others to join. Ocampos and Guedes make late runs into the box to catch the defense off guard. Moving the ball wide allows the team to stretch the defense, often looking for cutbacks from the byline.

A major strength is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. Having five players in the central zone allows SK Sturm to compress the midfield and win the second ball frequently. This makes it very hard for teams to play through the lines. The ability to shift between a narrow defensive block and a wide attacking stance also provides a significant advantage.
