SK Sturm relies on high energy and compactness to disrupt the opposition with a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a direct style where the team wins the ball and looks to hit the opponent quickly. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and use the five midfielders to control the tempo through work rate.

Schenk stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defence works as a flat back four with Gazibegovic on the right and Zehnter on the left. Wüthrich and Sylla act as the central defenders, where Sylla focuses on winning the header and Wüthrich covers the space behind. Gazibegovic and Zehnter are expected to push up when the team has the ball but must track back quickly to defend against wide runners. The unit tries to hold a compact formation to prevent through balls.

The midfield is the engine of the SK Sturm system. Chukwuani and Lucas sit in a double pivot to shield the defence and win the second ball. In front of them, Tresor and Fayzullaev operate in the half-spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Tomas plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box or play through the lines. This grouping allows the team to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.

Biereth acts as a lone striker, often tasked to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. He leads the press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the opposition back line. The attack relies on the movement of Tomas to find pockets of space between the lines. When the team moves into transition, Biereth looks to run in behind while the wide midfielders pull wide to stretch the defence. The goal is to create combinations that allow Biereth to receive on the half-turn or find space for a cross from the wings.

One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it hard for opponents to play through the centre. The team can also shift between a mid-block and a high press very quickly. By using the double pivot of Chukwuani and Lucas, the team keeps the middle of the pitch congested, making it difficult for the opponent to find passing lanes.
