Liverpool focuses on extreme verticality and high pressing within a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly to catch the opposition out of position. The team seeks to dominate the middle of the pitch to create constant pressure on the ball carrier.

Caoimhin Kelleher sits between the posts to act as a sweeper behind a high line. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate form a two man central defence that must remain brave to play out from the back. Van Dijk uses his aerial strength and reading of the game to command the area while Konate provides speed to cover runs in behind. This duo must step up to squeeze the space and maintain the defensive line when the team presses.

A five man midfield provides the engine for Liverpool to control the game. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson operate from central midfield roles to drive the play forward, though they often move wide to cross. Alexis Mac Allister acts as a link between the defence and the attack, while Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai occupy the half spaces to press aggressively and win the second ball. Mac Allister helps to shield the two centre backs and recycle possession to keep the pressure on.

The attacking unit uses three forwards to pin the opposition back line. Cody Gakpo plays as the central striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah operate as wide attackers, with Salah frequently cutting inside from the right to find shooting lanes. Diaz uses his dribbling style to beat markers on the flank. These three forwards press in pairs to force a long ball from the opponent.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win the ball in dangerous areas. The midfield presence allows Liverpool to create numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. Additionally, the team can quickly switch play to exploit wide areas when the opposition tries to compact the middle.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed for a high intensity game where winning the ball back quickly is the priority. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
