This lineup is built to play direct football and quickly move the ball into the final third to catch the opposition off guard. The team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and use the width of the field to stretch the defence.
Van Der Sar sits between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit functions as a back five with Stam acting as a right wing back and Krol playing as the left wing back. In the middle, Rijkaard, Neeskens, and Van Hanegem form a central block. Stam and Krol push high to provide width, while the central three defend zonally to protect the space behind the wing backs. Rijkaard and Neeskens act as ball playing defenders to start attacks, while Van Hanegem helps to cover runners and win the second ball.
The midfield operates with a two man unit consisting of Cruyff and Bergkamp. Cruyff acts as a carrier who drives forward with the ball to break the line, while Bergkamp works to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must work hard to squeeze the space and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle. Cruyff often drops deeper to receive the ball, allowing the team to build out from the back and progress through the thirds.
In the final third, the Netherlands use three attackers to pin the last defender. Gullit operates on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside, while Robben stays wide before cutting inside to use his pace. Van Basten leads the line as a central striker who holds up the ball and looks to find the feet of the attackers. The movement of Gullit and Robben creates space for Van Basten to move into channels or arrive late into the box. The team uses combinations in tight spaces to split the defence with a through ball.
This formation offers significant advantages in terms of width and attacking numbers. The overlapping runs from Stam and Krol create wide overloads that force the opposition to defend deep. Additionally, the ability to press in coordinated waves with the front three and the midfield duo makes it very hard for opponents to build out from the back. The speed of transition when winning the ball high up the pitch allows the attackers to hit in behind on the transition before the opposition can recover.
The 5-2-3 formation relies on aggressive pressing and rapid vertical movements. It is best suited for games where the team needs to exploit a high defensive line or dominate teams that play with a narrow midfield.
