Chelsea looks to play a direct and reactive style of football using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup focuses on staying compact and using the physical presence of the striker to move the team up the pitch. The goal is to defend in a narrow block and wait for the right moment to strike through quick transitions.

Petr Čech guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit from the back. Chelsea utilizes a back five that relies on a central trio of Marcel Desailly, John Terry (C), and N'Golo Kanté. Terry is a dominant force in the air and leads the line, while Desailly provides strength in the right channel and Kanté acts as a ball playing defender who can cover large spaces. On the flanks, Ashley Cole plays as an attacking wing back to provide width, while César Azpilicueta operates as a defensive wing back to help maintain the bank of five.

The midfield is a flat four designed to squeeze the space between the lines. Enzo Fernández and Frank Lampard occupy the central roles, where Lampard is known for his late runs into the box and ability to score from distance. Enzo Fernández helps to recycle possession and connects the defense to the attack. On the wings, Eden Hazard plays as a left midfielder who likes to cut inside, while Gianfranco Zola operates on the right to create chances through tight spaces. This midfield unit works to block passing lanes and win the second ball to restart attacks.

In the final third, Didier Drogba acts as the lone target man. He works to hold up the ball and win headers to bring the midfielders into play. The attack is built through combinations where Hazard and Zola move into the half spaces to support him. When the team wins the ball, the wing backs like Ashley Cole push forward to provide crosses, while the forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball. This setup allows Drogba to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The presence of Terry and Desailly provides great security against crosses, making the team very hard to break down centrally. The midfield pairing of Lampard and Fernández allows the team to transition quickly from a deep block to an attacking position. Additionally, having players like Hazard and Zola allows Chelsea to create overloads in the attacking third when the wing backs push up.

The 5-4-1 formation provides a very solid defensive base for Chelsea. It is best suited for games against dominant teams where the goal is to sit deep and hit on the break.
