Germany plays a very direct and vertical style of football using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly toward the opposition goal. By using a solid defensive base and three forwards, the team looks to strike fast in transition and exploit any gaps left by the opponent.

Neuer operates as the goalkeeper, often playing high to sweep behind the defensive line. The back five uses Vogts as the right wing back and Schnelinger as the left wing back to provide width during attacks. In the center, Beckenbauer works as a ball playing defender who can step into midfield to help build play. Matthaus provides strength and tackling as the right centre back, while Sammer covers the left side to maintain a compact defensive block.

The midfield consists of a two man unit with Netzer and F.Walter. Netzer acts as a playmaker who can play through the lines with his passing range, while F.Walter connects the defensive and attacking lines. Together, they must cover the ground to protect the back five and ensure they can recycle possession when under pressure. They work to win the second ball and immediately look to launch the attack once the ball is recovered.

In the attacking third, Germany uses three forwards to stretch the defense. G.Muller acts as the central striker, using his clinical finishing to find space in the box and score. Rummenigge plays on the left and can cut inside to use his pace and power, while Littbarski operates on the right wing to spread wide and cross. This attacking trio presses the opposition back line to force errors and creates many runs in behind.

A tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Vogts and Schnelinger push forward to overlap the wingers. The team also gains strength from the three centre backs, which allows the midfield to commit more players forward. This creates a high level of compactness when defending in a mid block, making it difficult for opponents to pass through the center or find space between the lines.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a strong balance between defensive security and rapid attacking transitions. It is best suited for facing opponents that play a high line and can be caught by quick movement in behind.
