Gento looks to get to the byline and deliver crosses, while Amancio cuts inside to create chances. D.Villa leads the line as the main striker to find runs in behind. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball. This creates many opportunities for one on one situations in transition.

The main advantages of this formation involve the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having Ramos and Puyol push up, Spain can create wide overloads. The central trio of Hierro, X.Alonso, and Xavi allows the team to play short from the back and maintain control. This makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle.

This formation provides a heavy attacking presence while remaining difficult to break down. La Roja is best suited for matches where they need to dominate possession and suffocate the opponent in their own half.
