Starting Lineup

Anselmino · Paredes · Varela · Molina · Colo Barco · Equi Fernandez · Balerdi · Brey · Zeballos · Retegui · Banega

Boca focuses on being defensively solid and hitting opponents on the break using a 5-3-2. This formation is built to absorb pressure and use the pace of the attackers to punish teams in transition. By sitting in a compact block, the team can absorb waves of attacks before quickly moving the ball forward to exploit gaps left by the opposition.

Brey stays between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back five functions with Equi Fernandez acting as the central anchor to win the second ball and command the area. Anselmino operates as a right centre back to cover wide areas, while Balerdi plays as the left centre back to provide strength in the air. Molina acts as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, whereas Colo Barco works as the left wing back to support the flank and track back when defending.

The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier and a playmaker. Banega sits in the middle to connect the defensive and attacking lines with his passing range. Paredes plays as the right central midfielder to press aggressively and win the ball high up the pitch. Varela occupies the left central midfield role to drive forward with the ball and link play. This trio works to squeeze the space in front of the back five and ensures the team can recycle possession when under pressure.

Boca utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. Retegui acts as the main striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Zeballos plays as the second striker to find spaces between the lines and make runs in behind. The team uses the width provided by Molina and Colo Barco to create overloads on the flanks, allowing the attackers to cut inside and attack the near post. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition with direct passes to the front two.

This lineup offers significant strength through its compactness when defending a lead. The presence of a three man midfield allows the team to control the center of the pitch and protect the central areas. Additionally, the ability to use attacking wing backs creates wide overloads that can isolate wide players in one on one situations during a quick break.

Boca relies on this 5-3-2 formation to remain hard to beat and strike with clinical speed. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams that leave space behind their high defensive line.
