Hungary looks to play a heavy counter attacking style of football within a 5-2-3 formation. The tactical identity is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to overcommit before breaking quickly. This lineup is designed to deny the turn and force a long ball, making it a very difficult unit to break down in a low block.

Grosicks stays between the posts to command his area and clear the lines. The defensive unit consists of a back five that works to hold a compact formation. Sarosi and Boszik act as the central defenders to win the header and win the second ball, while Meszoly provides extra cover in the middle. Rudas plays as an attacking wing back to provide width on the right, whereas Fogl plays as a more defensive wing back to track back and cover the left side. This defensive line works together to squeeze the space and set the offside trap when needed.

In the middle of the pitch, Puskas and Kubala form a double pivot to control the central zone. They aim to intercept passes and press in a mid-block to deny the pivot of the opposition. Puskas is tasked to carry the ball forward and drive into the half-spaces, while Kubala drops into a position to recycle possession and link the defense to the attack. They must work to win the ball high up the pitch or fall back to protect the center. Their role is to play through the lines and find the front three as soon as a turnover occurs.

The attacking unit features Kocsis as a pressing centre-forward who works to pin the last defender. On the flanks, Czibor and F.Bene operate as inverted wingers who look to cut inside and move into the pockets of space. They want to pull wide to stretch the defence and then cut it back toward the center. The team relies on rapid movement to hit in behind on the transition, with Kocsis looking to hold up the ball for the runners. The goal is to use the width from Rudas and Fogl to deliver early crosses or whip it in to the striker.

A primary strength of this lineup is the ability to create compactness when defending deep. Having five players in the back line makes it easy to double up on wide players and block the runner. Additionally, the team benefits from a massive speed of transition. When the midfield wins the ball, they can quickly switch play to the opposite flank to isolate a one-on-one wide or play a one-two to bypass the midfield entirely.

This 5-2-3 formation is perfect for Hungary to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams that can be punished in transition.
