Hungary focus on a vertical and counter attacking style of play. They utilize a 5-2-3 formation to stay compact while waiting to break quickly. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and then hit the opposition on the transition through rapid movement.

Grosicks operates from goal to lead the defensive unit. The team defends in a narrow defensive block with Meszoly sitting centrally to win the second ball and sweep behind the others. Sarosi and Boszik act as the wider centre backs to cover the channels and mark runners. Rudas and Fogl function as attacking wing backs who spread wide to provide width in possession. They are tasked to track back and maintain the back five when the team sits deep to deny the turn of the attackers.

A double pivot consisting of Kubala and Puskas connects the defensive and attacking lines. Kubala acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while Puskas works to shield the defence and intercept passes. They must work together to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. This pair is responsible for recycling possession and finding the feet of the striker.

The attacking unit uses Kocsis as a lone striker to hold up the ball and link play. Czibor and F.Bene operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside and threaten the goal. They aim to hit in behind on the transition or get to the byline to whip it in for Kocsis. The front three press from the front to force the opposition to play long and win the ball back high up the pitch.

One major advantage is the ability to hold a compact defensive line when sitting in a low block. The width provided by Rudas and Fogl allows for wide overloads during the attack. This creates space for Czibor and F.Bene to operate in the half spaces and combine in tight spaces. The team can also switch play rapidly to catch the opponent out of position and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This 5-2-3 formation is designed for Hungary to be defensively solid and lethal on the break. It is most effective against teams that dominate possession but leave space behind their defenders.
