Hungary National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Puskas (Hidegkuti/Zsengeller) · Kocsis (Schlosser/Deak/Takacs) · Kubala (F.Albert/Tichy) · Czibor (Nyers) · Boszik · Meszoly (Lorant) · Rudas (Biro) · Sarosi (Szoboszlay) · F.Bene (Konrad/Kalory) · Fogl (Lantos) · GrosicksHungary aims to be a side that is difficult to break down by maintaining a very compact unit. The team operates in a 5-2-3 formation that focuses on defensive stability and quick transitions. This lineup is built to stay solid in a mid-block and then hit the opposition on the break with pace.
Grosicks guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive line works as a back three with Meszoly, Boszik, and Sarosi. Meszoly stays central to win the header and cover the space, while Boszik and Sarosi provide strength in the wide channels. Rudas plays as an attacking wing back on the right to overlap the winger, while Fogl acts as the left wing back to provide width. The group works together to hold a compact formation and defend zonally to prevent any penetrative passes.
In the middle of the pitch, a two-man midfield duo of Puskas and Kubala connects the back line to the front three. Puskas uses his left foot to play through the lines and find teammates, while Kubala relies on his ball control to carry the ball forward. They must work hard to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from finding space between them. These two players are responsible for winning the second ball and recycling possession to keep the team moving.
The attack relies on three players to pressure the opposition. Kocsis leads the line as a target man, using his aerial strength to win the header and hold up the ball. Czibor plays on the left to cut inside and create chances, while F.Bene occupies the right flank to stretch the defence. The team aims to build play through the thirds using the wing backs to get to the byline. When the ball is won, the forwards look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the defense off guard.
A major advantage for Hungary is the ability to create wide overloads when Rudas and Fogl push high up the pitch. The presence of three central defenders ensures the team can stay compact when defending deep. Furthermore, the combination of a strong central trio and fast wingers allows for a high speed of transition during attacking phases.
This 5-2-3 formation is a highly effective way to absorb pressure and counter at pace. It is most effective when facing teams that play with high defensive lines and high possession.
