Hungary plays with a heavy focus on defensive stability and rapid counter attacks using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure in deep areas and then move the ball quickly to the front three. By utilizing a back five, the team can maintain a compact formation that is difficult to break down through the middle.

Grosicks commands the area from goal to lead the defensive unit. The back line works as a back five where Sarosi and Boszik act as the side centre-backs to cover the wide areas. Meszoly sits in the center of this unit to anchor the defense and win headers. Rudas plays as a right wing back to provide width and Fogl works as the left wing back to support the attacking phases. These wide defenders are tasked to push high up the pitch and deliver crosses while the central defenders stay back to protect the space.

The midfield is controlled by a two-man unit consisting of Puskas and Kubala. These two players act as the link between the defensive line and the attackers. Puskas uses his incredible passing range to find teammates and break the lines with his left foot. Kubala plays a vital role in shielding the defense and helping to recycle possession when the team is under pressure. They must work to squeeze the space in a mid-block and ensure they do not allow the opposition to play through the middle.

In the attacking phase, Hungary uses three players across the front. Kocsis acts as a central striker and uses his aerial strength to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Czibor operates from the left and looks to cut inside to create goalscoring opportunities, while F.Bene plays on the right to stretch the defense and provide width. This front three works to press the opposition back line and looks to hit in behind on the transition to catch the defense out of position.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages such as wide overloads created when Rudas and Fogl overlap the wingers. The team also benefits from the compactness when defending in a low block which makes it hard for opponents to find passing lanes. Furthermore, the speed of transition allows Hungary to move from a defensive posture to an attacking one very quickly.
