Botafogo aims to control the pitch through a highly aggressive and vertical system. This lineup uses a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm the opposition in the final third. By pushing five players into the middle of the pitch, the team seeks to dominate the ball and hunt for turnovers in high areas.

Jefferson/John guards the goal as the lone man in the defensive unit. The back line consists of just two central defenders, Mauro Galvao and Gonçalves, who must stay alert to any long balls sent behind them. Because there are only two in the back, they often play a high line to squeeze the space, meaning they rely on quick recovery runs. These two must be dominant in the air and ready to step up to intercept passes before the striker can turn.

The midfield is a dense block designed to win the second ball and progress the play. Arevalo Rios acts as the central engine, working to pick up runners and protect the two defenders behind him. Ahead of him, Seedorf operates in the left half-space to create from deep and move the ball through the lines, while Didi/Honda provides similar creativity from the right. The defensive work is shared by the two holding roles of Rafael/Cesar Prates/Cicin and Alex Telles/Edilson, who protect the central zones and help recycle possession. This five man unit allows Botafogo to occupy the middle of the park and deny the pivot of the opponent.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three forwards to stretch the defence. Luiz Henrique stays wide on the left to pull the defender out of position, while Renato Gaucho/Kalou occupies the right flank to isolate a one on one wide. In the center, Loco Abreu/Diego Costa acts as a target man, looking to win the header or hold up the ball for the oncoming midfielders. This front three works together to press the opposition back line, forcing them to play long and allowing the midfield to regain control.

One major advantage for Botafogo is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. The formation also creates wide overloads when the midfielders move into the channels to support the wingers. This setup allows the team to transition from a defensive block into a direct attack with great speed.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for teams that want to dominate through high pressing and central density. It is best suited for matches against opponents who struggle to handle intense pressure and physical battles in the middle of the pitch.
