Coritiba aims to control the center of the pitch through a high density of players, utilizing a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup relies on a heavy concentration of bodies in the middle of the park to dominate the ball and suffocate the opponent. The goal is to build play through a massive midfield block, ensuring the opposition has no room to move or find passing lanes.

Prass stands between the posts to guard the goal. Behind a very thin defensive line, Castan and Miranda3 act as the lone pair of central defenders. Because there are only two players at the back, Castan and Miranda3 must stay compact and communicate constantly to cover the wide areas. They often have to step up to intercept through balls or win headers, as they lack full backs to provide lateral cover. The defensive unit must hold a high line to squeeze the space, leaving them vulnerable to long balls if the midfield does not win the second ball.

The heart of the Coritiba system is the massive six man midfield. Ceará/Patric acts as the single pivot to shield the defense, while Nery and Adriano provide strength in the center. Rafinha operates on the left to connect the lines, and Anderson pushes the play from the right. Alex moves between the half spaces to create chances. This group works to recycle possession and win it back high up the pitch. By crowding the middle, they can press in a mid-block or trigger a press as soon as the opponent receives the ball.

Up front, the attack relies on two forwards working in close combination. M.Paraíba/Deivid and Jesé occupy the central spaces to act as a partnership. They do not stay isolated but rather look to link up with the advancing midfielders like Alex and Anderson. The forwards press the opposition back line to force errors, while the midfielders make runs into the box to support them. This formation seeks to create overloads in the final third by having midfielders arrive late into the box to finish chances.

One major advantage for Coritiba is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it nearly impossible for opponents to play through the center. The heavy presence of players like Adriano and Nery allows them to control the tempo and squeeze the space available to the opposition. Another strength is the ability to create quick combinations in tight spaces, as the density of players allows for short, sharp passing movements to break the lines.

This highly concentrated formation is designed to dominate teams that try to play through the middle. Coritiba will find success against opponents that struggle to bypass a crowded central zone.
