Westerlo Football Formation
Starting Lineup
CEARÁ · LEANDRO CAMILO/ LEO MOURA · RICARDO ROCHA · KENO/CARLINHOS BALA · RIVALDO/IRANILDO · AMARAL · GRAFITE · DADÁ/DENIS MARQUES · HUDSON/AUGUSTO RECIFE · VALDSON/RAFAEL BERGER · JUNINHO/THIAGO CARDOSO/JCWesterlo relies on a high intensity, vertical style of play using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and push the opposition back with constant pressure. The team wants to win the ball high up the pitch and attack immediately to catch the opponent before they can get organized.
Juninho stands between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit consists of a back two where Ricardo Rocha and Valdson act as the central defenders. These two must be dominant in the air and quick to cover the space behind them when the team plays a high line. Because there are only two central defenders, they often have to step up to engage attackers or sweep behind to prevent long balls from reaching the striker.
The midfield is heavily populated to control the central zones. A double pivot featuring Leandro Camilo and Ceará works to shield the defense and win the second ball. In front of them, Amaral and Hudson occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Rivaldo operates as an attacking ten, playing in the hole to create chances and pick up runners. This five man midfield allows Westerlo to compress the midfield and deny the turn of opposition players.
The attacking trio focuses on stretching the defense. Keno plays on the left as an inverted winger who looks to cut inside, while Grafite occupies the right side to provide width. Dadá acts as the main striker, looking to hold up the ball and find the feet of the midfielders. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball, while the wingers look to receive on the half turn and drive at the opposition back line.
One major tactical advantage for Westerlo is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield. By crowding the center, they can easily recycle possession and find ways to play through the lines. The formation also allows for quick transitions, as the midfielders are already positioned to support the front three once the ball is recovered.
This high risk formation is designed for teams that want to dictate the tempo through aggressive pressing. It is best suited for matches where Westerlo can isolate wide players in one on one situations and dominate the central areas.
