Flamengo looks to control games through a heavy presence in the final third, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on creating chaos in the opposition box while maintaining a solid foundation to absorb pressure. The system is built to play with high intent, using wide players to stretch the play and quick transitions to catch defenders out of position.

Gilmar stands between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back five features Junior Capacete as the central figure, providing height and strength to defend the middle. To his sides, André Cruz and Jr Baiano act as wide centre-backs to cover the channels and step up into midfield when needed. Jorginho and Leonardo operate as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and cross the ball into the box. This defensive unit stays compact, shifting together to protect the central zone.

The midfield relies on a double pivot of Djalminha and Casagrande to link the play. Djalminha works to drive forward with the ball and carry it into the half spaces, while Casagrande holds his position to shield the defence and win the second ball. They must work hard to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. This duo is responsible for recycling possession and finding the wide players to start new attacking moves.

Flamengo employs three attackers to pin the last defender and threaten the space behind. Renato Gaucho and Edmundo/Paulo Nunes act as inverted wingers, cutting inside to create numbers in the central areas. Romario/Chulapa operates as a clinical striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind to finish chances. The wingers press from the front to force a long ball, allowing the back five to regain control of the game.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through wide overloads when Jorginho and Leonardo push forward. By committing these wing backs, Flamengo creates numerical superiority in the attacking half. The team also benefits from the ability to drop into a low block quickly, making them very difficult to break down when defending a lead.

The 5-2-3 formation provides Flamengo with a blend of defensive security and attacking width. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to exploit space on the flanks against a narrow opponent.
