Flamengo focuses on a vertical style of play designed to hit the opposition quickly through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to dominate the middle of the pitch and use high volume attacking movements to overwhelm the defense. By placing five players in the central bank, the team aims to win the ball in the middle third and immediately look for forward options to catch the opponent out of position.

Julio Cesar stands between the posts to manage the defensive line. The defensive unit relies on a narrow back two consisting of JR Baiano/R.Rocha and Juan/Gamarra. These central defenders must remain alert to cover the space behind the advanced midfield line, acting as the last line of defense when the team loses possession. Because there are no traditional full backs, the central defenders must be able to win headers and tackle in wide areas when the opposition attempts to exploit the flanks.

The midfield bank is the engine room for Flamengo, operating with a heavy central presence. Athirson/Gilberto and Ze Roberto/Alessandro act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Vampeta and Felipe Melo occupy the central areas to drive forward and connect the defensive lines to the attack. Alex plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to play through the lines and find gaps in the opposition block. This five man midfield allows the team to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and control the rhythm.

The attacking unit utilizes three players across the front to stretch the opposition. Denilson/Adriano and Renato Gaucho/Edilson operate as wide attackers who look to cut inside and create goal scoring chances. Romario plays as the lone striker, using his clinical finishing and movement to find space in the box. The team builds attacks by moving the ball quickly through the midfield to the wide players, who then look to deliver passes into the penalty area or find Romario in one on one situations.

A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to dominate central areas and control the game. The positioning of the five midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center, forcing them to play wide. Additionally, the attacking trio can quickly transition into a high press, using the presence of Alex to pin the last defender and create chaos in the opponent's defensive third.

Flamengo uses this high risk attacking lineup to punish teams that leave space between their lines. This formation is best suited for matches where the team needs to take control of the ball and overwhelm a deep defensive block through central dominance.
