Dracena plays as the left center back while Cris and Luizao form the right side of the central trio. Maicon acts as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, whereas Sorin covers the left flank. This group focuses on keeping a narrow defensive block to deny central space.

The midfield consists of a four man line that links the defense to the attack. Edmundo plays in the attacking midfield role to connect with the forwards. In the deeper midfield area, Jorge Wagner, Alex, and Rivaldo work to control the tempo and recycle possession. Alex uses his passing range to find teammates, while Jorge Wagner and Rivaldo work to win the second ball and protect the central zone. They must work together to compress the midfield when the opposition tries to play through the lines.

Cruzeiro employs a lone striker in Edilson/Fred to lead the line. This forward must hold up the ball and wait for support from the advancing midfielders. The attacking plan relies on the wing backs, Maicon and Sorin, to provide width and deliver crosses. When the team wins the ball, the plan is to play quickly to the flanks or find Edilson/Fred in tight spaces. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and regain possession.
