Cruzeiro aims to control games through a vertical style of play using a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move through the lines with speed. The goal is to use quick transitions to catch the opposition before they can sit deep.

FABIO/RAFAEL acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line functions as a flat back four to maintain compactness. MARIANO works as an attacking full back on the right to provide width, while GILBERTO performs similar duties on the left. THIAGO HELENO and EDCARLOS/CAÇAPA form the central pair, where THIAGO HELENO provides cover and EDCARLOS/CAÇAPA acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. The defensive unit works to hold a high line to squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield operates with a three-man midfield with a carrier to connect the phases. RAMIRES plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space. GERSON MAGRAO and SORIN occupy the central roles, where they must win the second ball and press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. These players are responsible to shield the defense and recycle possession when the opposition pushes up. They also help to drive forward with the ball to link the defense to the attacking unit.

Cruzeiro utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. THIAGO RIBEIRO operates as a lone striker who can hold up the ball to bring others into play. ATHIRSON and PATRIC act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. This movement allows the wingers to isolate a one-on-one wide if they stay closer to the touchline, but they often seek to find the feet of the striker. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the build up of the opponent.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads from overlapping full backs. By pushing MARIANO and GILBERTO high, the team creates extra passing lanes that pull the opposing wingers out of position. Another advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield when RAMIRES moves into the half spaces. This allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch and launch immediate attacks.

This 4-3-3 formation allows Cruzeiro to dominate through high pressing and quick vertical movements. It is a lineup best suited for games where the opponent plays a high line and leaves space behind for runners.
