Cruzeiro relies on a direct and vertical way of playing, utilizing a 4-4-2 formation to control the tempo. FABIO/RAFAEL operates between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit works as a flat back four where EDCARLOS acts as a ball playing defender from the right side. BRUNO RODRIGO provides strength and covers the space behind the wide players. On the flanks, CEARÁ/MAYKE and EGIDIO provide width and must track back to help when the opposition attacks. The unit aims to hold the line and keep the distance between the defenders and midfielders small.

The midfield functions with a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. NILTON/LUCAS SILVA sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and recycle possession. DENILSON/TINGA works alongside him to win the second ball and carry the ball forward. Ahead of them, DAGOBERTO and JULIO BAPTISTA operate in the half spaces to connect the midfield to the attack. DAGOBERTO helps to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch, while JULIO BAPTISTA looks to arrive late into the box to support the strike force.

Cruzeiro uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. GOULART plays as a mobile striker who looks to link up play between the lines and pull wide to create space. He is joined by MARCELO MORENO/W.PAULISTA who acts as a presence in the box. The two attackers press the opposition back line to force a long ball and prevent them from playing out from the back. This duo relies on quick combinations and runs in behind to catch the defense out of position during transitions.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to create numerical superiority in the central areas when the midfielders step up. The team can also use wide overloads when the full backs push forward to support the wide midfielders.
