In goal, Taffarel/Alisson acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit relies on a very shallow back two consisting of Mauro Galvão/Juan/Gonçal and Lucio/Fernando Reges. Because there are only two central defenders, they must be dominant in the air and quick to cover the space behind them if the opposition hits in behind on the transition. Fernandão/Sobis operates as a pressing centre-forward or a link player to find the feet of the striker, while Pato/Jô/Paolo/L.Adriano occupies the space further up the pitch. This setup creates many combinations in tight spaces, with the wide midfielders pulling wide to create overloads. The goal is to use the technical quality of players like D'Alessandro to deliver early balls or cross into the box for the strikers to finish.
