Palmeiras Football Formation
Starting Lineup
PRASS/JAILSON/WEVERTON · MINA · EDU DRACENA · EGIDIO · ZE ROBERTO · FELIPE MELO · DIOGO BARBOSA · RAMIRES · ENDRICK/DEYVERSON · LUIZ ADRIANO · GABRIEL JESUSPalmeiras looks to win the ball high up the pitch and hit teams in behind on the transition through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on a heavy presence in the middle of the park to control the tempo and suffocate the opposition in their own half. The team relies on quick verticality to catch the opponent out of position once possession is regained.
Weverton acts as the last line of defense while the team maintains a very high line to compress the space. Edu Dracena and Mina form a central pair of ball playing defenders who must be ready to step up and intercept passes. Because there are only two center backs, they must be dominant in the air and quick to cover the space behind them. The defensive unit functions by squeezing the space between the lines and forcing the opponent to play long.
The midfield consists of a heavy five man block that dominates the center of the pitch. Ze Roberto sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Egidio and Felipe Melo operate as a double pivot to provide security, while Diogo Barbosa and Ramires push higher to link the defense and attack. Felipe Melo brings experience to the middle to win the second ball and disrupt the opposition. This midfield unit is designed to win it back high up the pitch and quickly find the front three.
In the attacking third, Palmeiras utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Luiz Adriano works as a pressing centre forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for others. Gabriel Jesus plays as an inverted winger on the right, cutting inside to create chances, while Endrick or Deyverson occupies the left flank. The front line focuses on runs in behind and finding the feet of the striker to break the line. They use combinations in tight spaces to pull wide players out of position.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The high press in coordinated waves allows Palmeiras to win the ball in dangerous areas. Additionally, the presence of three attackers allows for quick transitions that catch defensive lines before they can get organized.
Palmeiras uses this aggressive lineup to dominate games through central control and high intensity. It is a formation best suited for facing teams that try to build play from the back and leave space behind their midfield.
