The midfield is composed of a four man block designed to control the center and provide support to the front four. Amaral and Edilson act as the central pairing to shield the two defenders and win the second ball. Cicinho and Gilberto Silva operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Amaral provides the grit to disrupt play, while Gilberto Silva acts as an attacking ten to drive forward with the ball and find passes through the lines. Edilson and Cicinho must work hard to track back and ensure the team is not caught on the break.

Attacking the opposition requires a heavy front four that stays high to stretch the defence. Mancini and Eder Luis operate as wide attackers, with Mancini staying wide to provide width and Eder Luis looking to cut inside to create goal scoring chances. In the central zone, Evanilson/Rodrigo Fabri and Afonso Alves function as two forwards in a partnership. They focus on link up play between the lines and making runs in behind the opposition back line. This front line is designed to press the opposition back line relentlessly to force turnovers in dangerous areas.

Atlético Mineiro gains a clear advantage through numerical superiority in the final third and the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The heavy presence of Gilberto Silva and the two strikers makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
