Ponte Preta relies on a heavy central presence to control matches, operating through a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the pitch and suffocate opponents by crowding the central zones. The tactical intent is to win the ball in high areas and use a massive midfield block to squeeze the space available to the opposition.

Aranha/Giovani sits between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Nathan Silv and André Cruz, who must stay alert to any direct threats. Because there are only two defenders, they often have to defend man-to-man or quickly shift to cover wide areas when the ball moves out of the central mass. They act as the final barrier, needing to win every header and clear the lines when under pressure.

The midfield is the engine of the Ponte Preta system, utilizing a massive six man block to control the game. Royal/Apodi acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Edilson and Gerson Magrao operate in the central channels to win the second ball, while Patric connects the defensive layer to the higher attackers. On the flanks of this midfield group, Elias and Nikão operate in the half spaces to provide width and create passing lanes. This group is designed to press in a mid-block and pick up runners before they can turn.

The attacking line uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. Sheik and Luis Fabiano work together to hold up the ball and provide a focal point for the long balls or quick passes from the midfield. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball, which the central midfielders can then intercept. The movement between Sheik and Luis Fabiano creates opportunities for runs in behind or quick one-two combinations to split the defence.

One major strength of this Ponte Preta formation is the numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the center, they can compress the midfield and make it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Another advantage is the ability to use Elias and Nikão to stretch the defence, creating space for the central midfielders to carry the ball forward. This setup makes the team very hard to play through centrally.

This formation is built to overwhelm opponents through central dominance and a heavy press. It is best suited for games where the team needs to control the tempo and squeeze the opposition into their own half.
