Starting Lineup

DANRLEI · MAURO GALVAO/ADILSON · EMERSON · MENEGAZZO · R10 · ZE CARLOS · ANDERSON POLGA · MARCELINHO/GRAFITE · LOCO ABREU/LUIZAO · RODRIGO FABRI · GILBERTO

Grêmio operates with a heavy emphasis on attacking intent through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and overload the final third by pushing massive numbers forward. The goal is to control the game through a crowded midfield and a front three that stays high to pin the opposition back.

Danrlei stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. Behind him, the backline consists of only two central defenders, Mauro Galvao/Adilson and Anderson Polga. Mauro Galvao/Adilson acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while Anderson Polga provides cover to sweep behind a high line. Because the formation only uses two central defenders, they must hold the line carefully and communicate to prevent being caught by long balls.

The midfield is the engine room of the Grêmio system, utilizing a five man line to control the center. Ze Carlos sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Beside him, Gilberto and Menegazzo operate as two central midfielders who carry the ball forward and recycle possession. Emerson works on the left side of this block to help connect the defense to the attack, while Rodrigo Fabri plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to create chances. This group works to squeeze the space in the middle and ensure the team can win it back high up the pitch.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defense. R10 plays on the left as an inverted winger who cuts inside to create goal scoring chances. On the right, Marcelinho/Grafite provides width to deliver crosses. Loco Abreu/Luizao leads the line as a target man to hold up the ball and win headers. The combination of the wide players and the central striker is designed to create runs in behind and allow the attacking midfielders to arrive late into the box.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. The heavy presence in the middle also allows for coordinated waves of pressure when the team tries to win the ball back high up the pitch. By flooding the attacking zones, the team can create frequent wide overloads and isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This 2-5-3 lineup is a high risk, high reward system that relies on aggressive central control. It is best suited for games where Grêmio needs to break down a deep defensive block through sheer numbers in the final third.
