Starting Lineup

VICTOR/DIDA · FERNANDO/GEROMEL · GILBERTO SILVA · CAJUEIRO · FABIO AURELIO · EDILSON · ELANO · CRIS · HUGO · ZE ROBERTO · DOUGLAS

Grêmio looks to play a highly vertical style of football designed to overwhelm opponents through pure numbers in the final third. This lineup utilizes a 2-4-4 formation that prioritizes quick transitions and directness over long periods of control. The aim is to get the ball into the attacking zones as fast as possible to catch the opposition out of position.

Victor/Dida starts in goal and acts as the last line of defense. In front of him, the defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Fernando/Geromel and Cris. These two central defenders must remain very disciplined, acting as ball playing defenders who can also manage the space behind a high line. Because there are no full backs in the back line, they must be dominant in the air and quick to recover when the ball is lost. The defensive unit functions by staying compact to prevent through balls while allowing the rest of the team to push high up the pitch.

The midfield is composed of a four man block that connects the defense to the heavy front line. Gilberto Silva and Fabio Aurelio operate as a double pivot in the center to shield the two defenders and win the second ball. Cajueiro and Edilson provide the necessary width from the wide midfield roles, acting as wide midfielders who can drive forward. This group is tasked to recycle possession and quickly move the ball to the attackers. The midfielders must also track back to cover the wide areas when the team loses possession.

Grêmio employs four attackers to pin the opposition defense. Hugo and Elano act as a central partnership, with Hugo serving as a target man to hold up the ball and Elano looking to arrive late into the box. On the flanks, Ze Roberto and Douglas act as wide wingers who want to cut inside to create central overloads. This front line is designed to stretch the defense by pulling wide players out of position and then attacking the space in the middle. They will often look to hit in behind on the transition to exploit a high line.

The main advantage of this formation is the sheer number of players pushing into the attacking third, which creates massive pressure on the opponent. By using Cajueiro and Edilson to provide width alongside the forwards, Grêmio can create wide overloads. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the short distance between the double pivot and the four attackers allows for immediate attacking movements once the ball is won back high up the pitch.

This 2-4-4 formation is built for aggressive, high risk football that relies on overwhelming the opposition in the final third. It is best suited for games where Grêmio needs to chase a result against a team that sits deep.
