Vasco da Gama looks to dominate through a high press and heavy attacking presence using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and overwhelm the opposition through verticality and concentrated numbers in the final third. The goal is to squeeze the space and use the forward line to force mistakes.

Cassio protects the goal while the defensive unit works with a very high line. Cris and Odvan act as the two central defenders in this narrow back two. These players must be dominant in the air and fast enough to cover the space behind them when the team pushes forward. Because there are no traditional full backs, Cris and Odvan must be prepared to defend one on one or step up to intercept through balls.

The midfield is a five man unit that acts as the engine for Vasco da Gama. Diogo Barbosa and Fagner work as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Perdigão plays in the center to connect the defensive and attacking lines by moving the ball from deep to the front. On the flanks, Coutinho and Juninho/Pernambucano operate in the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and create chances. This midfield group must work hard to cover the wide areas left vacant by the defensive setup.

The attack features three players across the front to stretch the defence. Romario/Chulapa acts as the main striker to find the feet of the midfielders or make runs in behind. Edilson and Edmundo/Eder Luis play as wide attackers who cut inside to create goalscoring opportunities. They press the opposition back line constantly to prevent them from playing out from the back. This front three looks to combine in tight spaces and arrive late into the box to finish moves.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves with so many players in the attacking half. The team can also create wide overloads by having Coutinho or Juninho/Pernambucano push high into the channels. This creates a massive central presence that makes it hard for opponents to defend the middle.

Vasco da Gama relies on intense pressure and a high number of attackers to break down teams. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and hunt for goals against a deep block.
