The midfield is a double pivot consisting of L. Romero and M. Henrique. These two players must work hard to shield the defence and stop any central breakthroughs. L. Romero is tasked to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive unit to the attack, while M. Henrique focuses on winning the second ball and recycling possession. They are the only players sitting in the middle, so they must cover vast amounts of space to prevent the team from being bypassed in transition.

Cruzeiro uses a front line of four attackers to pin the last defender. Gabi and Kaio Jorge operate as a two forwards partnership in the center, with Gabi acting as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the build up. Dudu and M. Pereira provide the width on the flanks as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. This attacking group is designed to create runs in behind and make quick combinations to exploit gaps in the defensive line.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs join the attack. By having Dudu and M. Pereira move into central areas, they pull defenders out of position and allow William and Marlon to push forward. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can go direct to the four attackers immediately after winning the ball. This allows Cruzeiro to catch opponents before they can get back into a compact shape.
