Atalanta focuses on high intensity and verticality through a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to win it back high up the pitch and play through the lines quickly to catch opponents off guard. The team aims to stretch the defence using aggressive movement and constant pressure.
Martinez starts in goal to organize the defensive line. The back three consists of Martiarena acting as the central anchor, while Pratdessus and Illustre play as the wide centre-backs to cover the channels. Martiarena remains central to win the header and provide stability, whereas Pratdessus and Illustre are ready to step up and squeeze the space when the team plays a high line. The unit functions to defend zonally and keep the team compact during the transition.
The midfield engine relies on a central three to connect the play. Mustafaraj sits in the middle to shield the defence and recycle possession. Acosta and Petrolito operate in the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball high. Castrovilli plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to arrive late into the box and find the feet of the striker. This midfield unit works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition players.
In the attacking third, Atalanta uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Torres acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the hunt from the front. On the flanks, Carra' and Pitronaci act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads. These wide players often pull wide to spread the play before looking to play a one-two to break the line. The goal is to use link-up play between the lines to create runs in behind.
Atalanta possesses clear tactical advantages through this setup. The formation allows for wide overloads when the midfielders and attackers combine to overlap the winger. There is also an ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to build play from the back. This creates numerical superiority in key zones of the pitch.
The 3-4-3 formation provides an aggressive platform for high pressing and rapid attacking transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
