Starting Lineup

Germany focuses on controlling the ball and pressing high to dominate games through a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a possession based game where the team keeps the ball in tight spaces to tire out the opposition. The intent is to use high positioning to win it back high up the pitch and immediately look to penetrate the defensive lines.

Manuel Neuer acts as the goalkeeper, often playing a sweeping role behind a high line to manage space. The back line functions as a staggered back four with Rüdiger at left back and Kimmich at right back. Tah acts as a ball playing defender in the center alongside Raum. Rüdiger is known for his physical intensity and ability to defend in one on one situations, while Tah provides aerial strength. Kimmich and Rüdiger can push up to support the attack, while the center backs hold the line to prevent long balls.

The midfield works as an attacking ten behind the striker with a three-man midfield featuring a deep playmaker and two advanced creators. Kroos sits in the hole to receive the ball from the defenders and play through the lines with his famous passing range. Ahead of him, Musiala and Wirtz operate in the half spaces to drive forward with the ball. Musiala uses his dribbling style to beat markers, while Wirtz connects the midfield and attack by finding pockets of space. This trio works to squeeze the space in the center and recycle possession when a gap is not found.

Germany utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Müller plays as a pressing centre-forward who works hard to find space between the lines. Havertz operates as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while Füllkrug plays as an inverted winger on the right. The movement of Havertz and Füllkrug creates room for Müller to arrive late into the box. This front three will press the opposition back line to force a long ball and then look to win the second ball to start a new wave of attack.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Germany. The team can create numerical superiority in midfield when Kroos drops deeper to help the build up. The wide players and overlapping full backs can create wide overloads to pull the opposition out of position. Additionally, the ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
