Starting Lineup

Barco · L. Martínez · Molina · Romero · Lautaro · Garnacho · Dybala · J. Álvarez · Mac Allister · E. Fernández · Martínez

Argentina aims to control games through high intensity and verticality in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and quickly move it into the final third. The team looks to overwhelm the opposition with a heavy presence in the middle of the park, using a high line to squeeze the space.

Martínez operates between the posts as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, Romero and L. Martínez form a narrow back two that must be ready to step up and play out from the back. Because there are only two central defenders, they must stay compact to cover the space behind them while the midfield manages the threat. Romero provides aerial strength and aggression to defend the area, while L. Martínez focuses on covering runs and winning the second ball.

The midfield unit is the engine of the Argentina lineup. Barco and Molina act as a double pivot to shield the two centre backs and deny the turn to oncoming attackers. In front of them, E. Fernández and Mac Allister operate as inverted eights, looking to carry the ball forward and break the line with progressive passing. Mac Allister uses his passing range to switch play, while E. Fernández drives into the half spaces to connect the lines. Dybala plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding pockets of space to create chances and arrive late into the box.

The front line focuses on stretching the defence through wide movement and central pressure. Garnacho plays as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and find the feet of the striker. On the right, J. Álvarez operates as an inverted winger who can also track back to help the midfield. Lautaro acts as a pressing centre-forward, leading the line by forcing a long ball from the opposition. These three attackers work in combinations to create runs in behind, often using the width provided by the midfielders to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, allowing the team to dominate the center of the pitch. The high press in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build play from the back. Additionally, the ability to transition quickly from a mid-block to an attacking state allows for rapid attacks.

The 2-5-3 is a high-risk, high-reward formation designed for teams that want to dominate possession and press intensely. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a deep defensive block through central overload.
