Starting Lineup

Laimer · Hinteregger · Dragovic · Lienhart · Alaba · Schlager · Lazaro · Arnautovic · Baumgartner · Sabitzer · Bachmann

Austria seeks to play with a high press and high intensity in a 3-4-3. The team wants to win the ball high up the pitch and move through the lines quickly to catch opponents out. This formation is built to attack transitions and put constant pressure on the opposition defensive line through vertical movement.

Bachmann acts as the foundation of the defense. The back three consists of Hinteregger, Dragovic, and Lienhart. Hinteregger plays as the left centre-back and Lienhart as the right centre-back. Dragovic holds the central position to cover the space and pick up runners. They often set the offside trap and play with a high line to squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opponent.

In the middle, Schlager and Laimer form a central pairing to control the game. Laimer uses his pressing intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch. Schlager works to win the second ball and recycle possession to keep the play moving. Alaba operates on the left and drops between the centre-backs to help play out from the back using his passing range. Lazaro covers the right flank to provide width and tracks back to help the defense when they lose possession.

The attack features Arnautovic as a lone striker who uses his strength to hold up the ball and lay it off to runners. Sabitzer plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create chances for the teammates arriving late into the box. Baumgartner stays wide on the left to stretch the defense and create space in the middle. They look to hit in behind on the transition and use quick combinations to break the line.

A key strength for Austria is the ability to press in coordinated waves. The wide midfielders help compress the midfield when they move inside to create numerical superiority. The team also finds success in wide overloads when Alaba or Lazaro push forward to overlap the wingers and whip it in toward the far post.

This 3-4-3 is a high-intensity formation designed for vertical football. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to play short from the back and try to pass through the lines under pressure.
