Zárraga and Santisteban form a double pivot in the midfield to shield the defense. Zárraga looks to win the second ball and recycle possession, while Santisteban focuses on tracking back and protecting the center. Rial and Mateos play as two tens in the half-spaces to connect the lines. These two work to carry the ball forward and play through the lines to find the feet of the striker.

Three attackers across the front line stretch the defence. Basora stays on the right to spread wide and provide width. F.Gento plays as an inverted winger on the left, using his pace and dribbling to cut inside and attack the near post. Di Stefano leads the line as a center forward with his goalscoring and technical ability to hold up the ball. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the forwards to combine in tight spaces or hit in behind on the transition.

A major advantage for Spain is the ability to create wide overloads. By having Rial and Mateos push high into the half-spaces, the team can isolate Basora and F.Gento in one on one situations. The formation also allows the team to press in pairs to trigger a press much higher than a traditional four-man defense, which helps to win it back high up the pitch.
