Coritiba looks to play a defensive, counter attacking game using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams quickly. The goal is to keep the lines close to deny space in the middle and force the opposition to the wings.

Diego Costa guards the goal as the last man. The defensive unit consists of a back five where Marquinhos and Adson act as attacking wing backs to provide width when the team wins the ball. In the center, Eduardo, Caio Alexandre, and Gabriel Menino form a sturdy block to defend the box. Eduardo and Gabriel Menino look to win the header and clear the lines, while Caio Alexandre stays central to cover space. They defend zonally to keep the unit compact when the opposition moves the ball.

The midfield functions as a bank of four to squeeze the space between the lines. Juan Jesus and R. Renan sit in the middle to shield the defence and win the second ball. They act as the pivot to recycle possession when needed. On the flanks, I. Vinícius and Vanderlan work to track back and help the wing backs. They must press in a mid block to stop the opposition from playing through the lines. This four man unit links the defensive block to the lone forward.

Up front, Gabriel V. operates as a lone striker to lead the press from the front. He has to hold up the ball and wait for support from the wide players. When Coritiba transitions, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition. Marquinhos and Adson push up to overlap the winger and deliver crosses into the area. Gabriel V. must try to pin the last defender to create room for the midfield runners to arrive late into the box.

A major advantage for Coritiba is the compactness when defending deep in their own half. By having five defenders and four midfielders, they make it very hard for the opponent to find gaps. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads once the ball is recovered. This allows them to switch play quickly and catch the opposition out of position.
