This defensive unit works together to maintain a high line and squeeze the opposition.

The midfield operates with a three-man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. Fernando and Allân act as the engine room, with Fernando working to shield the defense and Allân driving forward to carry the ball into the half spaces. Bernard plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines. This trio connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession and finding quick passes to break the lines.

Sunderland utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Luiz Araújo plays as an inverted winger on the right, frequently cutting inside to shoot or create space for Mariano to overlap. On the left, Igor Paixão stays wide to pull defenders apart before looking to deliver crosses. Arthur Cabral acts as a pressing centre-forward, using his strength to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. The front three combine in tight spaces to create chances through quick one-twos and runs in behind.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, particularly the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent.
