Pituca acts as the right-sided center back, while Luciano sits in the middle to command the area and Thiago Maia covers on the left. Wesley and Gabriel Veron play as attacking wing backs to provide width. Wesley pushes up the right flank to offer an outlet, and Gabriel Veron does the same on the left. These wing backs must track back to help the defenders when the team loses the ball.

In front of the defense, a four-man midfield works to shield the back three. Luiz Felipe and Jemerson operate as the central pair, with Jemerson holding his position to protect the center while Luiz Felipe looks to carry the ball forward. Matheuzinho and M. Bidu occupy the wide areas in a flat midfield four. Matheuzinho provides width on the right, while M. Bidu works the left side. This midfield unit must compress the space to prevent passes through the middle and win the second ball. They link the defense to the attack by recycling possession and finding the forward quickly.

The offensive side relies on a lone striker, Mycael, who acts as a pressing centre-forward. Mycael works to pin the last defender and harass the opposition center backs to trigger a press. Because there is only one man up top, the attack is built through transitions where Wesley and Gabriel Veron try to get to the byline to whip it in. The team looks to hit in behind on the transition to find Mycael or use the wide players to create chances. The goal is to use the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the defence and find gaps in the opposition block.

This 5-4-1 lineup offers high levels of compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines close together, Portugal makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when Wesley and Matheuzinho push up the right side. This combination can overwhelm the opposition left back and allow for crosses into the box.
