Genoa play with a heavy emphasis on verticality and direct attacking, using a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm the opposition. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opponent in behind before they can settle. The main goal of this setup is to create chaos in the final third by pushing many bodies forward at once.
In goal, Pontet acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit consists of a very narrow back two featuring Fragapane and Palmisano. These two central defenders must be prepared to defend large amounts of space behind them, often acting as covering defenders while the rest of the team pushes up. Because there are only two players in the back line, Fragapane and Palmisano need to win the second ball and clear the lines quickly whenever the opposition manages to break the initial press.
The midfield is a massive engine room of five players that connects the defense to the attack. Francofonte operates in the center to control the tempo and recycle possession. To his sides, Cappello and Messina work to dominate the middle of the pitch, with Messina acting to shield the defense and Cappello looking to drive forward with the ball. The wide areas are occupied by Schembari and Neto, who act as attacking midfielders in the half spaces. These two are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and support the advanced players.
The front line uses three attackers to pin the last defender and stretch the defense. Arquin leads the line as a pressing centre-forward, looking to find the feet of his teammates or run into space. On the wings, Idoyaga and Monatanaro 05/ Viegas act as wide attackers who want to stay high to keep the opposition back line deep. This attacking group works in combinations to create runs in behind, often looking to isolate defenders in one on one situations through quick transitions.
Genoa benefit from massive numerical superiority in the midfield, which allows them to dominate the center of the park. This formation also provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. By pushing the wide midfielders like Schembari and Neto high, the team creates wide overloads that force the opposing full backs to defend deep.
This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system designed for aggressive, attacking football. It is best suited for matches where Genoa can dominate possession and use their numbers to overwhelm a deep defensive block.
