River plays a direct style of football that relies on quick transitions and verticality in a 4-4-2 formation. Ledesma stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four that can push up to squeeze the space. Montiel plays as an attacking full back on the right, looking to overlap the winger and whip it in. Acuña performs a similar role on the left, using his high intensity to drive forward. In the middle, Pezzella uses his aerial strength to win the header during set pieces and defensive clearances. M.Quarta acts as a ball playing defender who can play short from the back to start attacks.

The midfield is composed of two central players, Villagra and Castaño, who work to control the middle of the park. These two occupy the central zones to intercept passes and protect the back line. They connect the defenders to the attacking line by receiving the ball and passing through the lines. On the flanks, Meza and M. Rojas provide the width needed to spread the play. The wide players must track back to help the full backs when the team defends in a mid-block.

Up front, River utilizes a two-man strike partnership consisting of Driussi and Borja. Borja acts as a target man, using his physical strength to hold up the ball and win the second ball. Driussi plays as a second striker who finds the feet of Borja or makes runs in behind the defence. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and keep the opposition pinned back. The attack is built through wide service from the wingers and full backs. This creates chances for Driussi to arrive late into the box or for Borja to flick on headers for teammates to attack the far post.

One major advantage of this River formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Montiel and Acuña push high. This forces the opposition wingers to defend deeper. Another strength is the speed of transition when the midfield wins the ball and immediately looks to hit in behind on the transition. The partnership between Borja and Driussi allows the team to combine in tight spaces or use direct long balls to bypass the midfield.
