Starting Lineup

Leao · Pulisic · Reijnders · Musah · Tomori · Fofana · Thiaw · Bennacer · Theo · Jimenez · Maignan

Milan aims to play a high press with a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly in transition. The team relies on central control and vertical movement to break the lines. By using this formation, AC Milan looks to dominate the center of the pitch and use wide areas to stretch the defence.

Maignan operates between the posts to protect the goal with his commanding presence and shot stopping. The defensive unit uses a back three where Tomori acts as the left centre back to cover space and Musah plays as the right centre back. Fofana sits in the middle of the three to defend zonally and win headers. Working together, the unit holds a compact defensive block and sets the offside trap when the line steps up.

A midfield of five players controls the center of the pitch. Thiaw and Bennacer form a double pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. Bennacer uses his passing range to help play out from the back. Jimenez plays as the right central midfielder to help recycle possession. Theo operates in the left central role and often pushes up to overlap the winger. Reijnders plays as the attacking midfielder to connect the lines and carry the ball forward into the final third.

Two attackers lead the line in a partnership. Leao plays as the left striker and uses his dribbling style and pace to pull wide and isolate defenders one on one. Pulisic plays as the right striker and tends to cut inside to find space for a shot. Both players press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The duo look to hit in behind on the transition and find space between the lines through quick combinations.

Numerical superiority in the midfield helps the team win the second ball. Milan can create wide overloads when Theo and the wide attackers push high. They use speed of transition to catch opponents out of position. Squeezing the space in the middle makes it hard for opponents to play through the lines.

This 3-5-2 lineup is a high pressing system designed to dominate the central areas. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a slow build up from the back.
