Argentina aims to dominate through high pressing and rapid transitions in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup relies on overwhelming the middle of the pitch to win the ball high up the pitch and create instant chances. E. Martínez guards the goal while the defensive unit operates with a very high line. Passarella and Samuel form a two man central defence where they must be ready to step up and intercept long balls. Because there are only two central defenders, they must be ready to defend man to man or track runners if the midfield is bypassed.

The midfield is a dense block designed to squeeze the space in the center of the pitch. Redondo and Mascherano form a deep double pivot to protect the two defenders and recycle possession. Zanetti and Heinze act as wide players who provide width and can push up to support the attack or drop back to help the defence. Messi operates as the attacking ten behind the striker, using his vision and passing range to split the defence with through balls. Redondo and Mascherano work to win the second ball and allow Messi to find space between the lines.

Argentina uses three attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. Di Stefano acts as the main striker to hold up the ball and link with the runners. Maradona plays on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and create, while Di María stays wide on the right to whip it in or deliver early crosses. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This setup creates many combinations where Messi can play a one two with Maradona or Di Stefano to find gaps.

This formation offers incredible numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows Argentina to win the ball back quickly in dangerous areas. The wide players like Zanetti and Heinze create overloads that pull the opposition defenders out of position.
