Man Utd Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GK · CB · CB · CB · LWB · DM · CM · RWB · AM · AM · STManchester United aims to play a high press and vertical game through a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball high up the pitch and quickly attacking the opponent with wide players and a central striker. The goal is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition and create rapid transitions.
GK starts the build up from the back behind a back three. CB sits centrally to act as a ball playing defender, while RCB and LCB provide cover and help to defend the wide areas. These central defenders must be ready to step up to squeeze the space or sweep behind a high line if the opposition tries to play long. The defensive unit works to maintain a compact shape when the team drops into a mid block.
The midfield operates with a two man unit consisting of a wide player on each side and two central players. RWB and LWB act as attacking wing backs to provide width, while LCM and RCM work to control the middle. LCM and RCM must win the second ball and connect the defensive line to the attack. They are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and recycle possession when needed.
In the attacking third, the team uses three attackers. LW and RW act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for the wing backs to overlap the winger. The ST acts as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opponent build up. This front line works in combinations to find the feet of the striker or play through the lines. They aim to create runs in behind and provide cutbacks from the byline when the wing backs get forward.
Manchester United gains a major advantage through wide overloads. By having RWB and LWB push high, the team can create two on one situations against the opposing full backs. The formation also allows for the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play short from the back. The central presence of the three defenders and two midfielders ensures the team stays hard to break down in the middle.
This 3-4-3 formation is built for a team that wants to dominate through aggression and quick transitions. It is best suited for matches where the opponent plays a high line and can be punished by speed in behind.
