Starting Lineup

P. ROBERTO · BALDEK · DE LEON · CASEMIRO · CHINA · TITA · OSVALDO · RENATO · TARCISIO · CAIO · MAZAROPI

Grêmio looks to play a direct and vertical game through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the second ball and hit the opposition in transition. The team relies on a solid foundation to absorb pressure before spreading wide to use the full dimensions of the pitch.

MAZAROPI stays between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit works as a back five with CHINA acting as the central anchor to sweep behind the line. BALDEK plays as the right centre-back to cover the space behind the wing back, while DE LEON operates on the left side of the central trio. P. ROBERTO acts as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, whereas CASEMIRO performs the same role on the left side to help the team move the ball forward.

The midfield consists of a two man unit acting as a central pair to control the middle of the pitch. TITA works to drive forward with the ball and connect the defense to the attack. Beside him, OSVALDO stays more central to shield the defense and recycle possession when the team faces pressure. Together, they attempt to compress the midfield and stop the opposition from playing through the lines.

Grêmio utilizes three attackers across the front to stretch the opposition defense. CAIO plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. TARCISIO operates on the left as an inverted winger who looks to cut inside and find space in the half spaces. RENATO occupies the right flank to provide width and look for chances to deliver crosses into the box.

One major advantage for Grêmio is the ability to create wide overloads using the wing backs. When P. ROBERTO and CASEMIRO push high, they create extra passing lanes that force the opposition to defend deep. The team also benefits from the compactness when defending in a low block, making it difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a strong defensive base while allowing for quick transitions through the wide areas. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
