Cruzeiro Football Formation
Starting Lineup
VITOR · GELSON BARESI · WILSON GOTTARDO · NONATO · DONIZETE · FABINHO · RICARDINHO · PALHINHA · MARCELO RAMOS · ELIVELTON · DIDACruzeiro aims to play a high intensity, direct game built on a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup focuses on stretching the opposition and winning the ball high up the pitch to catch teams in transition. By keeping four players high, the team looks to pin the last defender and create constant pressure on the opponent back line.
Dida sits between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back four operates as a flat defensive block where Vitor acts as the right back to provide width. Nonato covers the left side, while Wilson Gottardo and Gelson Baresi form the central pairing. Gottardo and Baresi act as the primary defenders to clear the lines and win headers, while the full backs must track back quickly to prevent being caught out when the team pushes forward.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with Fabinho and Donizete working to control the center of the pitch. Fabinho acts as the carrier to move the ball from the defense, while Donizete focuses on shielding the defense and intercepting passes. This duo must work hard to cover the massive space left behind them when the forwards press. They are tasked to win the second ball and quickly move the play through the thirds to the attackers.
Cruzeiro uses a very aggressive front line featuring two central forwards and two wide attackers. Elivelton and Marcelo Ramos act as a striking partnership, with one often looking to hold up the ball while the other makes runs in behind. Ricardinho plays on the right wing, while Palhinha stays wide on the left. These wide players often cut inside to create space for the full backs to overlap, or they stay wide to stretch the defence and deliver crosses into the box.
The tactical strengths of this formation lie in its ability to create wide overloads and provide immediate pressure upon losing possession. By committing four players to the attack, the team can press in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. This setup also allows for quick transitions where the wingers can isolate a one on one situation against the opposition full backs.
This high risk, high reward formation is designed to overwhelm opponents through sheer offensive volume. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep in a low block.
