Dominating possession and controlling the tempo is the primary aim for Man City in this 4-3-3 formation. The team looks to play through the lines and use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence. By maintaining a high position, they aim to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately attack.

Ederson plays as the goalkeeper and uses his passing range to help play out from the back. A flat back four provides the defensive foundation. Walker operates as a right back who uses his pace to cover the flank, while Clichy plays at left back to support the attack. Kompany and R. Dias act as the central defenders, with Kompany using his aerial strength to defend crosses and R. Dias working to hold the line. This unit works to squeeze the space and maintain a high line.

A three man lineup with a single pivot defines the midfield. Toure plays as the defensive midfielder to shield the defence and win the second ball. De Bruyne and D. Silva occupy the central roles, with De Bruyne using his passing range to break the line and D. Silva to connect the lines. Toure drops between the centre backs to receive when needed, while De Bruyne and D. Silva push forward to occupy the half spaces. This unit ensures the team can recycle possession effectively.

Three players make up the front line. Agüero acts as a lone striker who finds the feet of the midfielders and looks to score in the box. Sterling plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, which allows Clichy to overlap. On the right, Wright-Phillips stays wide to stretch the defence and whip it in to Agüero. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

Man City finds success through numerical superiority in the midfield and wide overloads. The presence of De Bruyne and D. Silva allows the team to pass through the thirds with ease. Additionally, the movement of Wright-Phillips and Walker creates space to isolate wide players in one on one situations. Breaking quickly after winning the ball in the final third is another key strength.

This 4-3-3 formation is designed for total control through possession. It is most effective against teams that defend in a low block.
