Starting Lineup

Colidio · Driussi · Lanzini · Rojas · Meza · Enzo/Villagra · Acuña · M.Quarta · Pezzella · Montiel · Armani

River aims to dominate the center of the pitch through an aggressive 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to suffocate opponents by packing the middle of the field and controlling the tempo of the game. The goal is to sustain pressure in the final third and use a massive midfield block to win the ball back immediately after losing it.

Armani stays between the posts to manage the defense from deep. With only two central defenders, Pezzella and M.Quarta, the team operates with a very high line. Pezzella uses his aerial strength and experience to command the box, while M.Quarta acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Because there are no full backs, these two must be ready to cover large spaces when the opposition attempts to play wide or hit in behind on the transition.

The midfield is a massive engine designed to control every zone. Montiel and Acuña act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and recycle possession. In front of them, Enzo/Villagra, Meza, and Rojas form a dense line that works to squeeze the space and pick up runners. Lanzini plays as an attacking ten behind the two forwards, operating in the pockets to create chances. This heavy midfield presence allows River to build triangles in tight spaces and ensure they always have a passing option to move the ball forward.

Up front, the team utilizes a partnership of two forwards. Colidio and Driussi work together to lead the line, often looking to combine in tight spaces. Colidio can drop deeper to link up play with the advancing midfielders, while Driussi looks to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. The attackers are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. Width is provided primarily by the midfielders pushing higher rather than dedicated wingers.

The main advantage of this 2-6-2 formation is the extreme numerical superiority in midfield. By having six players in the center, River can easily win the second ball and control the rhythm of the match. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the density of the midfield to trap opponents in their own half. This formation makes it very difficult for teams to play through the lines.

This formation is a high-risk, high-reward strategy built for total dominance. It is best suited for matches where River faces a team that sits deep and lacks the speed to exploit the wide areas.
